HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/24/06) – Christine Bailkowski scored at 3:51 in overtime to give Clarkson University a 2-1 win over Colgate University in women’s hockey on Friday, Nov. 24 at Starr Rink.
After two scoreless periods, Colgate’s
Tara French (Truro, N.S.) broke the deadlock with the game’s lone even-strength goal at 5:17 in the third frame. Freshman
Jill Cater-Cyker (Ithaca, N.Y.) sent a pass from the blue line that found its way through traffic to the far boards. French collected the puck off the boards and skated in to the near post where she slipped the puck past the blocker of Stephanie Hansen. Sophomore
Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) was credited with the second assist on the play.
Clarkson picked up the pace midway through the third and started to fire hard at the net, putting 14 shots together compared to a two-period average of seven. The Raider defense backstopped by
Elayna Hamashuk (Nepean, Ont.), who made a beauty of a kick-save, were impenetrable.
Hunt was called for high-sticking at 17:57 that would force the Raiders to play man-down for two of the final two minutes and three seconds of regulation. Hamashuk made three saves before the Golden Knights evened the game with 41 seconds remaining. Brook Beazer found Marie-Jo Gaudet who banked the puck off the post that went in-and-out of the net. The official signaled no goal just as the goal judge flipped the light to signal a goal, and after a discussion the Clarkson bench roared as the scoreboard flipped to 1-1.
Colgate seemed to regain some luck as Lindsay Williams was called for an interference call at 1:59 into the overtime period. Two Raider shots were turned away by Hansen and a third went wide before the Golden Knights took advantage of a loose puck. Bailkowski went one-on-one with Hamashuk after connecting on a long outlet pass from Carlee Eusepi and slipped the puck five-hole for the game-winner.
Hamashuk made 32 saves as Colgate falls to 4-9-1 and 4-3 in the ECACHL. Hansen stopped 17 for Clarkson who improves to 7-6-2 and 2-4-1 in the league.
The first two periods saw Clarkson with a slight lead in shots, taking a 9-8 edge in the first and 8-3 advantage in the second. The third period was the difference as the Golden Knights outshot the Raiders 14-4, and each squad had three shots apiece in the overtime session.
