LEWISBURG, PA. (11/18/06) – Freshman quarterback Marcello Trigg completed 9-of-10 passes for 185 yards and one touchdown, and ran for 73 yards and one touchdown to rally Bucknell (6-5, PL 3-3) to a 31-28 win over Colgate (4-6, PL 3-3) in the season finale for both teams.
Bucknell’s rally overshadowed a strong performance by Colgate’s
Jordan Scott (Hyattsville, MD), who carried 27 times for a season-high 184 yards and one touchdown. Scott finished the season with 1,234 yards and moved into eighth place in career rushing with 2,598 yards in two seasons.
Bucknell jumped out to a 10-0 lead on its first two possessions of the game. The Bison scored on a 42-yard field goal by Will Carney and a two-yard run by Josh DeStefano. Colgate finally got its offense untracked after
Geoff Bean (Oneonta, NY) returned a kickoff to the Colgate 38.
The Raiders drove 62 yards in 10 plays scoring on the first play of the second quarter, when quarterback
Mike Saraceno (Sunrise, FL) carried around left end for the touchdown.
Mike Buck (Basking Ridge, NJ) added the extra point.
After Bucknell missed a 35-yard field goal attempt, Colgate took over and raced 80 yards in seven plays for a 14-10 lead. Fullback
Eric Tupta (University Heights, OH) scored his first collegiate touchdown on a one-yard plunge. Buck added the extra point.
Late in the second quarter, Colgate took possession on its own 35-yard line with 1:59 remaining. The Raiders put together a two-minute drill that ended with freshman
Ty Henry (Orlando, FL) making an acrobatic catch in the corner of the end zone on a six-yard pass from Saraceno with nine seconds left. Buck’s extra point kick gave Colgate a 21-10 halftime lead.
Bucknell took the opening kickoff of the second half and marched 70 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Marcello Trigg scored on a one-yard sneak and Carney added the extra point.
The Bison recaptured the lead on their next possession following a 13-yard punt by Colgate’s
Jason Sutton (North Easton, MA). Taking over at the Colgate 32, Trigg connected on a 27-yard touchdown pass with Richard Simpson for a 24-21 lead with 8:14 remaining in the quarter.
Bucknell upped its lead to 31-21 with the help of some luck in the fourth quarter. Trigg fumbled at the one-yard line, but offensive tackle Chad Glasser recovered in the end zone for a touchdown.
Colgate came right back to trail by three points following a short kickoff by the Bison that gave the Raiders possession at the Colgate 41. Scott capped the scoring drive with a four-yard run with 6:29 remaining.
However, Bucknell was able to run the clock down to 11 seconds on its next possession leaving Colgate with no chance of a comeback.
