McNaughton Scores in OT to Give Colgate a 4-3 Win over Yale

Carly McNaughton scored at 3:28 in overtime to give Colgate a 4-3 league win over Yale.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/27/06) – Senior Carly McNaughton (Lethbridge, Alta.) scored with 1:32 remaining in overtime to lift Colgate University women’s hockey to a 4-3 win over Yale on Friday, Oct. 27 at Starr Rink.

The win was Colgate’s (1-4-1) first victory of the season and was the squad’s first overtime victory since 2003 when the Raiders defeated Wayne State 3-2.

McNaughton tallied the game-winner when she knocked in an Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) rebound to the top shelf at 3:28 of the extra session with help from Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.).  The Raider bench quickly emptied as the team celebrated on the ice.

Yale and Colgate traded goals in the first, with the markers coming just 23 seconds apart.  Colgate freshman Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) gave the Raiders a 3-1 lead before Yale went on a two-goal run late in the third to even the game at three apiece.

Christina Sharun picked up a Caroline Murphy pass at the top of the right-hand face-off circle and sent a shot towards the net.  Ann-Renee Guillemette redirected the puck as she stood to the right of net and had the clean shot at 13:27.

Just 23 seconds later Brown connected with Marissa Dombovy and Kate Wolgemuth in the neutral zone and skated in to slip the puck past Yale’s Shivon Zilis.

In the second frame, Stewart collected the puck at center ice and skated in on net all alone.  She deked Zilis and snuck the puck past the blocker at 16:31 to give Colgate a 2-1 lead.

Midway through the third period, Stewart notched her third tally of the season when she tapped in the puck amid a flurry in front of the Yale net.  Linemates Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) and Ashley Bradford (Burnaby, B.C.) were credited with the feeds.

Yale’s Kristen Stuppay’s power-play goal at 14:50 inched the Bulldogs within one at 14:50.  Sheila Zingler tried to sneak the puck past Wheeler but it rebounded back out onto the ice where Stuppay was able to put a stick on it and send it glove side.

Minutes later Regan Gilbride sent a cross-ice pass to Denise Soesilo on the right wing who one-timed the puck towards the net.  The puck bounced around in front of the net before Jenna Spring knocked it over the goal line at 16:09 to even the scoring at 3-3.

Colgate outshot Yale 32-21 in the game, and had a 3-1 advantage in the extra session.

Wheeler earned the win making 18 stops, while Zilis made 28 saves for Yale who falls to 0-2 on the season.

Colgate will host Brown University, who fell 3-2 to Cornell this evening, tomorrow at 4 p.m.
