HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/24/06) – Thirteen different Raiders recorded at least one point as the Colgate men’s hockey team (3-2-0) skated to a 9-0 win against Canisius (1-5-0) on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Starr Rink.
Junior All-America candidate
Tyler Burton (North Vancouver, B.C.) and freshman
Jason Williams (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) led the way with three points each. Burton netted a goal and had two assists while Williams posted three helpers. Six other Raiders recorded two points each, and five posted one point. Of those, senior
Marc Fulton (Vancouver, B.C.) led the team with two goals, and junior
Mike Werner (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) recorded his first collegiate point with an assist.
Eight of Colgate’s nine scores came in special teams situations as the Raiders were 6-for-16 on the power play and posted two short-handed goals. Colgate killed off all 16 Canisius power-play attempts as the teams combined for 70 penalty minutes.
Junior All-America candidate
Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) made 16 saves to earn his first shutout of the season and the fifth of his career, while Canisius junior Bryce Luker played the entire game and posted 24 saves as Colgate outshot his Griffs 33-16, including 24 shots on the power play.
Fulton opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 4:09 mark of the first period off a set-up by Williams and senior
Mike Campaner (Thunder Bay, Ont.). Canisius kept Colgate away from the net for the next nine minutes, but then Colgate scored three times within 5:06 to take a 4-0 lead into the first intermission. Freshman
David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) and Fulton each scored a power-play goal to start the streak, both of which were set up by sophomore
Mark Anderson (Hastings, Neb.), and sophomore
Tom Riley (Ottawa, Ont.) ended the period with an even-strength goal set up by classmate
Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) and Williams.
The second period’s scoring started just 11 seconds after the teams returned from the lockerrooms as junior
Ben Camper (Rocky River, Ohio) netted a short-handed goal set up by Werner. Sophomore
Nick St. Pierre (St. Etienne, Que.) scored a power-play goal at the 13:36 mark, and Burton finished the period by scoring a short-handed breakaway goal during a 5-on-3.
Colgate scored its last two goals within 90 seconds midway through the third period. Junior
Dustin Gillanders (Kyle, Sask.) and sophomore
David Sloane (Ambler, Pa.) both netted their first goals of the year on the power play.
Colgate's nine goals were the most the team has scored since it defeated Vermont 9-4 on Jan. 24, 2004. The nine-point scoring margin is the most lopsided win by CU since it defeated Plattsburgh 14-3 on Dec. 11, 1992.
The Raiders are at Albany’s Pepsi Arena, home of the ECACHL Championship, for the Governor’s Cup Presented by Citizen’s Bank this weekend. Colgate will play the first game of the tournament against Quinnipiac on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 4:00 p.m. Capital District rivals Rensselaer and Union square off in the nightcap. The next day, the consolation game will be played at 2:00 p.m., and the championship with start at 5:00 p.m.
