Jordan Scott (Hyattsville, MD) carried 32 times for 162 yards and one touchdown, and senior quarterback
Mike Saraceno (Sunrise, FL) passed for 205 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Colgate (3-4 overall, PL 2-0) to a 46-3 win over Fordham (2-5, PL 0-2) Saturday at Jack Coffey Field.
Scott becomes the 13th player in school history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a career, and moves into 11th place all-time with 2,111 yards. He also breaks the record for most rushing yardage by a Colgate running back in the first two seasons of a career.
Saraceno, who connected on 15-of-24 passes, moved into ninth place in career passing yardage with 3,417 yards.
Colgate had another fine defensive effort holding the Rams to 85 yards rushing, and 162 yards of total offense. The defensive unit forced Fordham into three-and-out seven times, and stopped them once on fourth down.
Colgate came out with its best opening quarter of the season with 20 points. The Raiders scored on their first three possessions
After stopping Fordham on the opening drive of the game, the Raiders struck quickly on the second play from scrimmage, when Saraceno connected on a 65-yard pass with wide receiver
Kenny Parker (Stratford, NJ) for a touchdown.
Mike Buck (Basking Ridge, NJ) added the extra point.
Colgate stopped the Rams on fourth down on the next possession at the Colgate 32-yard line. Scott ripped off a 56-yard run to put the Raiders deep in Fordham territory. He later scored his ninth rushing TD of the season from two-yards out to put the Raiders ahead 13-0. A bad snap resulted in a missed conversion attempt.
With 49 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Colgate upped its lead to 20-o, when Saraceno scored on an eight-yard run around the right corner. Buck added the extra point.
On the first possession of the second quarter, Buck kicked his first collegiate field goal to cap a 10-play, 63-yard drive with a 29-yard effort for a 23-0 lead.
Fordham’s only points of the opening half came atter a fumble recovery by the Rams at the visitors’ 36-yard line. Micah Clukey kicked a 19-yard field goal as the gun sounded to end the half.
The only score in the third quarter was a 32-yard field goal by Buck, after Colgate’s
Nate Johnson (Avenel, NJ) recovered a fumble at the Fordham 20-yard line. Colgate led 26-3.
In the fourth quarter, Colgate took advantage of
Sam Breslin’s (Wayland, MA) second interception of the quarter to increase its lead to 33-3. Breslin intercepted at the Fordham 40-yard line, and Saraceno connected with
David Morgan (Davie, FL) on a seven-game touchdown pass from 14:05 left in the game.
Colgate’s final two touchdowns came from junior tailback
J.J. Bennett (Cleveland, OH), who scored on runs of five and 69 yards. Bennett finished with five carries for 80 yards.
