ITHACA, N.Y. (10/14/06) – Quarterback Nathan Ford passed for two touchdowns and ran for a pair, while Luke Siwula carried 29 times for 145 yards and one touchdown to lead Cornell (2-3) to a 38-14 win over Colgate (2-4) Saturday at Schoellkopf Field.
The Big Red snapped a 10-game losing streak against Colgate, and picked up their first win over the Raiders at Schoellkopf Field since the 1988 season.
Cornell took advantage of two Colgate turnovers in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead. The Big Red opened the scoring following Colgate’s first fumble loss of the season. Colgate wide receiver
David Morgan (Davie, FL) fumbled after a completed pass, and Cornell’s Matt Grant recovered at the Raider 33-yard line.
Three plays later, Ford hit an uncovered Siwula with a 24-yard touchdown strike for a 7-0 lead. Peter Zell added the extra point.
On Colgate’s next possession, quarterback
Mike Saraceno (Sunrise, FL) threw the first of his two interceptions. Taking over at the visitors’ 36-yard line, the Big Red scored six plays later on Ford’s five-yard run. Zell made it 14-0 with the extra point.
Colgate scored its only touchdown of the first half with 14:07 left in the second quarter, when
Jordan Scott (Hyattsville, MD) scored on a one-yard run on fourth-and-goal. Saraceno ran for the two-point conversion cutting the Big Red lead to 14-8.
Cornell upped its advantage to 21-8 with 7:50 remaining in the first half, when Ford connected on a 37-yard pass play to Jesse Baker. The Big Red got the ball when Colin Nash intercepted Saraceno at the Cornell 47-yard line.
Cornell’s final points of the opening half came on a 24-yard field goal by Zell with 11 seconds remaining for a 24-8 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Cornell scored on a one-yard run by Ford, capping a 57-yard drive in 11 plays to increase its lead to 31-8.
Scott, who gained 42 yards on 17 carries, scored his second TD of the game with 7:56 remaining on a four-yard run. The Raiders’ two-point conversion attempt failed leaving Cornell with a 31-14 lead.
Cornell scored its final touchdown with 6:44 remaining on a 20-yard run by Siwula that finishing off a two-play, 73-yard drive by the Big Red.
Saraceno was Colgate’s leading rusher gaining 84 yards on 11 carries, as the Raiders managed only 132 rushing on 33 carries. He completed 15-of-28 passes for 219 yards.
On the defensive side,
Mike Gallihugh (Midlothian, VA) made 19 tackles including one for a loss.
David Wesley (Dupont, PA) made 10 tackles.
