Boxscore

HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/8/06) - The Colgate University women’s hockey team was able to break Dartmouth’s perfect record in the all-time series with their first ever tie against the Big Green, a 2-2 tie at Starr Rink on Sunday, Jan. 8.

Freshman Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) scored both goals for the Raiders, while freshman goaltender Elayna Hamashuk (Nepean, Ont.) was impressive in net in her first career ECACHL start.

Sophomore defender Mallory Johnston (Chatham, Ont.) sent a diagonal pass from the left defensive zone up the ice to the left wing and connected with Allison Paiano (Orleans, Ont.). Paiano passed to Hunt who wristed the puck near post to light the lamp for Colgate at 9:18 of the first period.

Danielle Grundy knotted the score at one apiece at 11:45 of the second with a power-play goal. Grundy picked up a Meredith Batcheller pass in the slot and went glove side on Hamashuk. Maggie Kennedy was credited with the second assist on the goal.

Ashley Bradford (Burnaby, B.C.) sent a pass up the ice to Paiano who was just inside the far left circle in the offensive zone. She moved the puck to Hunt who was at the top of the circle. Hunt deked her defender and backhanded the shot past goalie Kate Lane at 7:42 of the third period to give Colgate the 2-1 lead.

With six minutes remaining in regulation, the Big Green felt the pressure to even the scoring and threw everything they could at Hamashuk. Maggie Kennedy skated past the net, trying to sneak one past Hamashuk on the right side. The puck rebounded to the stick of Sarah Newman who sent another shot on net that was redirected by Julia Bronson. Bronson flipped the puck top shelf for the game-tying goal at 14:56 of the third.

Hamashuk recorded an impressive career-high 41 saves, playing in her first overtime contest. Lane stopped 19 shots for Dartmouth.

Colgate is now 7-7-4 and 4-2-2 in the ECACHL and Dartmouth moves to 6-7-1 and 3-5-1 in the league.

The Raiders return to Starr Rink on Friday, Jan. 13 when they host No. 7 Princeton at 7 p.m. The following day, Colgate will face off against Quinnipiac at 2 p.m.
