Men's Basketball Opens Patriot League Play With A 71-58 Win Over Army

WEST POINT, NY (1/7/06) – Senior guard Alvin Reed scored a season-high 18 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead Colgate to a 71-58 win over Army in the Patriot League opener for both teams at Christl Arena.

 

Colgate (7-8, PL 1-0) wins its first road game of the season in seven outings, while Army drops its fourth straight game. The Raiders have won three straight in the series against the Cadets.

 

Colgate head coach Emmett Davis picked up his 105th win with the Raiders, moving into fourth place on the school’s all-time victory list.

 

Also in double figures for Colgate were Kyle Chones with 15 points and Jon Simon with 10. Jarell Brown led Army with 18 points off the bench, while Colin Harris tallied 12 points.

 

Colgate came back from a seven-point deficit in the second half for its first win of the year when trailing at halftime.

 

With the score tied 11-11 in the first half, thanks to eight points from Colgate’s Jon Foss, the Cadets moved in front by six points on baskets by Corban Bates, Brown and Lance Dietz with 10:01 remaining.

 

The Raiders put together a nine-point run over the next five minutes for a three-point lead, 20-17, with 5:47 left. Dan Gentile, who finished with nine points, had five in the run.

 

Later, while trailing 22-19, Army scored eight straight points to recapture the lead 27-22 with 2:46 remaining in the opening half, before hanging on for a three-point lead at halftime, 30-27.

 

Colgate fell behind by seven points in the second half, 41-34, with 16:17 remaining. The Raiders, however, scored the next 15 points, as part of a 23-4 run, to take a 57-45 lead with 8:47 left. Kyle Chones had six points, Reed five and Kyle Roemer five in the decisive run.

 

The Cadets managed to cut the lead to five points 61-56 with 2:28 remaining, but the Raiders sealed their first road win of the season making 7-of-8 from the charity stripe in the final minutes.

 

GAME NOTES – Reed has moved into 24th place in career scoring with 985 points … Simon moved into a tie for ninth place in career 3-pointers made with 90.
