PROVIDENCE, R.I. (1/28/06) - The Brown University women’s hockey team shut out Colgate, 3-0 on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Meehan Auditorium. The Bears, who are receiving votes in both national polls, got revenge for their own 3-0 derailment in Hamilton earlier this season.
Freshman Nicole Stock picked up her first career shutout, making 15 saves. Wheeler turned away 37 shots for Colgate, making double-digit saves in each period.
Colgate drops to 9-10-5 and 6-5-3 in the ECACHL, while Brown moves to 11-9-2 and 9-3-1 in the league.
Colgate’s Allison Paiano (Orleans, Ont.) added pressure as the Bears were on their first power-play opportunity midway through the opening frame, as she charged in behind the net trying to steal the puck from a Brown defender. After battling with two defenders she gained control of the puck and tried a wrap around but couldn’t get the shot off as a defender stood in her way.
Moments after killing off that penalty, Hayley Moore was able to light the lamp for Brown with feeds from Keaton Zucker and Rylee Olewinski at 12:44 of the first period. Moore one-timed a shot from the dot of the right face-off circle that went high over the shoulder of Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) and fell behind the goal line.
Savannah Smith took a shot from the right side that was rebounded out to the stick of Ashlee Drover on the opposite side. Drover was able to tuck the puck under the cross bar to give Brown the 2-0 lead at 6:48 of the second period. Olewinski also received credit on the play.
Brown made it 3-0 with a power-play goal at the start of the third fram. Zucker sent a shot at Wheeler from the right circle. The puck went off of Wheeler, bounced on top of the goal and went behind the net, where Zucker was skating in to get to it. Zucker picked up the puck and wrapped around the left side of the net and went low to the right corner pocket at 1:11 of the third period.
The Raiders will resume their six-game road stretch playing a pair of games against No. 6 Mercyhurst next weekend, Feb. 3-4. Friday’s game will be at 7 p.m., and Saturday’s will start at 2 p.m.
