Strong Defensive Effort Lifts Colgate Over Army 60-41

HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/28/06)Kyle Roemer scored 14 points to lead Colgate to a 60-41 Patriot League win over Army Saturday at Cotterell Court.
 
Colgate (8-13, PL 2-5) snapped a five-game losing streak, while sending Army (5-14, PL 1-6) to its second straight setback.  The Raiders have won four straight over the Cadets.
 
Behind Roemer in the scoring column were Kyle Chones with 10 points and Jon Simon and Todd Checovich with nine apiece.  Army was led by Jarell Brown with 13 points off the bench.
 
Colgate had an outstanding defensive effort holding its opponent to the second lowest point total of the season.  Army shot only 27.7 percent from the field (13-of-47) and missed its first 12 shots of the game.  Meanwhile, the Raiders shot 42.9 from the field goal.
 
From 3-point range, Colgate made 6-of-16, while Army connected on just 1-of-9.  In the rebounding department, Kyle Chones, Roemer and Marc Daniels had six apiece.  Army was led by Matt Bell with five.  The Raiders out-rebounded the Cadets, 38-29.
 
Colgate scored the first seven points of the game and never looked back.  The Raiders led by as many as nine points in the first half, before settling for an 18-15 halftime lead.
 
Army didn’t score its first field goal until 7:17 remaining in the first half, when Corban Bates made a jumper to make the score 12-7.  The Cadets’ second field goal came with 3:57 left as the Colgate defense smothered Army, holding them to five field goals on 21 attempts in the opening half.
 
Colgate broke the game open scoring the first nine points of the second half, getting five points from Roemer and four from Kyle Chones.  Again, Colgate’s defense did the job limiting the Cadets to two field goals in the first 10:01.  The Raiders steadily pull away leading by 21 points with 2:47 left.
 
GAME NOTES – Colgate played without the services of its second leading scorer Alvin Reed, who was injured in practice this week … For the fifth time in his career, Checovich finished with a career-high nine points … Freshman point guard Trevaron Vinson played 19 minutes.  He had four assists and no turnovers … The Raiders had nine blocked shots led by Daniels with three.
