New Haven, Conn. (1/27/06) - The Colgate women’s ice hockey team battled to a 3-3 draw with Yale on Friday, January 27 at Ingalls Rink. Colgate had a 3-1 lead headed into the third frame when Yale fought back, scoring two power-play goals to even the contest.

USCHO.com National Defensive Player of the Week Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) stopped 33 shots for Colgate. Yale started second-string goalie Shivon Zilis, a sophomore who had started in just two games prior to tonight’s contest. Zilis made 20 saves for Yale.

With Yale on the power-play Wheeler made a great stop with a redirect from the doorstep. The puck was turned away out towards the boards where Kelsey Johnson got to it and dropped the puck back to Jenna Spring who rifled a shot that went through traffic and over the shoulder of Wheeler. Kristen Stupay was credited with the second assist on the first goal at 7:53 of the first period.

Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) got tripped up by a Bulldog inside the right face-off circle after receiving a pass from Allison Paiano (Orleans, Ont.). The referee signaled a delayed penalty on the infraction but Becky Irvine (Lakeview, N.S.) grabbed the puck from behind Brown and skated in on net, firing a shot past Zilis to even the game at one apiece at 13:32.

Just 1:02 into the second frame Colgate’s Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) broke the tie with help from Clancy Todd (Thorold, Ont.). Hunt sent a shot at Zilis from the top of the circle, forcing her to go down on her stomach to stop the puck. Zilis was unable to cover it up as Hunt skated in and knocked in her own rebound.

The Raiders increased their lead to 3-1 as Ashley Johnston (Duxbury, Mass.) tallied her first goal of the season. Johnston jammed the puck off her defender’s stick just outside the crease and sent a quick shot past Zilis at 18:45. Juniors Carly McNaughton (Lethbridge, Alta.) and Tara French (Truro, N.S.) earned assists on the play.

The Bulldogs mounted a comeback, scoring two goals both on the power-play, in the third period. Stupay set up Maggie Westfal, who took a straight shot through a screen from the high slot at 10:30.

Five seconds after the first face off was taken following a Colgate penalty, Yale tallied the equalizer. The face off taken at the right circle was won by Yale and drawn back to Johnson who ripped a shot that found its way to the lower left pocket of the net to force the overtime period.

The Raiders played two of the final minutes on the power-play but couldn’t capitalize. The final 50.6 seconds were in favor of the Bulldogs as they were on the man-advantage. Both goaltenders stood strong to hang on for the tie.

Colgate is now 9-9-5 and 6-4-3 in the ECACHL, while Yale is 5-9-4 and 2-4-3 in the league.

The Raiders will face off with Brown tomorrow, Saturday Jan. 28 at 4 p.m., at Meehan Auditorium. The Bears fell 3-1 to the Big Red of Cornell in Providence this evening.
