Women’s Hockey Drops a 4-1 Game to Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (10/23/05) - Katelynn Laffin scored two goals to lift Providence to a 4-1 victory over Colgate University on Sunday afternoon. It was Providence’s first win of the season. The Friars are now 1-1-1, while the Raiders fall to 0-2-2.

Laffin scored her first of two goals with just 36 seconds remaining in the first period on the power play with assists from Kristin Gigliotti and Kathleen Smith.

After a scoreless second period, Providence’s Sonny Watrous made it 2-0 with the Friars' second power-play goal at the 10-minute marker of the third period. Karen Thatcher and Erin Normore were credited with assists. The Friars’ special teams were at it again just over two minutes later when Thatcher tallied a short-handed marker at 12:15 after a pass from Watrous.

Colgate’s Ruth Fish (Dewitt, N.Y.) added her second goal of her collegiate career and second power-play goal when she tipped in an Allison Paiano (Orleans, Ont.) pass at 17:43 to cut Providence’s lead back to 3-1.

With 1:19 remaining, Laffin scored her second goal of the game, the first even strength goal of the contest, when she connected on a Kelli Doolin pass to put the game out of reach for Colgate.

Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) turned away 34 shots for the Raiders, while Jana Bugden stopped 31 for the Friars.

Colgate returns to Hamilton on Oct. 28 to begin a nine-game homestand which begins with a two-game series with Wayne State on Friday at 7 p.m.
