HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/4/05) - Colgate’s Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) scored two power-play goals to lead the Raiders to their first ECAC Hockey League victory of the year, a 3-0 shutout over Brown on Friday night.

The first period went scoreless but Colgate dominated from the drop of the puck, outshooting Brown, who is receiving votes in both national polls, 17-3. O’Hara Shipe, the ECACHL Goaltender of the Week, and Colgate’s Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) were able to hold off the offense.

Sophomore Cassie Reid (Chilliwack, B.C.) ignited the Colgate offense with her first goal of the season at 7:21 of the second stanza. Tara French (Truro, N.S.) sent a pass to Ashley Johnston (Duxbury, Mass.) who quickly sent it to Reid who was at the Colgate redline. Reid picked up the puck and split her two defenders creating a mini breakaway. With the Brown defenders battling to stay with her, Reid wristed a high shot glove-side that rang off the far-side post and fell past the goal line.

Colgate freshman Hunt tallied her first of two man-advantage goals when she received a pass from Reid. Reid streaked down the right side boards, stopped short just as she crossed the blue line, and sent a drop a pass to Hunt. Hunt cut into the slot while Carly McNaughton (Lethbridge, Alta.) was able to create a screen. Hunt skated untouched all the way to the left face-off circle before she slid the puck five-hole under the goaltender Shipe at 15:07 of the second period.

Colgate was able to capitalize on its second 5-on-3 opportunity of the game at 10:59 of the third period when Hunt collected her second marker. Sophomore defender Mallory Johnston (Chatham, Ont.) sent a cross-ice pass to Hunt who sent in a shot but the puck bounced off a defender's shin pad and back to her stick. Hunt’s second shot found an opening glove side and hit the back of the net.

The Raiders outshot the Bears 28-20 in the contest. Colgate’s special teams were able to convert 2-for-9 on the power-play, while Brown went 0-for-6. Brown was unable to sneak the puck past Wheeler, who made 20 saves in her first shutout of the season. Shipe made 25 saves in the loss.

Colgate is now 2-3-2 on the season and 1-0 in the league, while Brown falls to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.

Colgate hosts Yale on Saturday, November 5 at 4 p.m., at Starr Rink to close out the series.
