Boxscore

ITHACA, N.Y. (11/27/05)- The Colgate University women’s ice hockey team defeated Cornell, 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Lynah Rink to sweep the Big Red in the home-and-home series. Sophomore Mallory Johnston (Chatham, Ont.) and junior Carly McNaughton (Lethbridge, Alta.) each had a goal and an assist in the win, which moved the Raiders to 7-4-2 overall and a perfect 4-0-0 in ECACHL play. The Big Red falls to 2-6-0 overall and 0-4-0 in the conference.

Johnston put Colgate on the board when she went top shelf on Cornell’s senior goaltender Flora Vineberg after finding herself all alone in front of the net on the Raider power play at 9:58 of the first period. McNaughton was credited with the assist on the play.

The Raiders held on to the lead until the Big Red answered back with a man-advantage goal of their own at 15:19 of the second stanza. Cornell’s Halina Kristalyn knotted the game at one apiece when she tipped in Jen Munhofen’s slap shot from the blue line, after receiving a cross-ice pass from Emily Cabral from the right side.

The Raiders entered the ice in the third period with momentum trying to break the 1-1 tie and did just that 45 seconds into the period. Senior Allison Paiano (Orleans, Ont.) chipped a shot that went high over the glove of Vineberg to the back of the net with help from freshman Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) for the eventual game-winner.

Minutes later, Colgate made it 3-1 when Johnston received a pass from Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) on the left side of the ice and sent a slap shot towards the net from the blue line. McNaughton, positioned between the face-off circles redirected the puck towards the net and past Vineberg at 4:04.

The Big Red removed Vineberg in net for the final 1:30 for the extra attacker, but Colgate netminder Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) came up strong for the Raiders, making two saves. After a scramble in front of the net, Wheeler exited the contest with an upper-body injury and was replaced with freshman Elayna Hamashuk (Nepean, Ont.) for the final 11 seconds. Colgate won the final face-off low in the Big Red zone and was able to control the puck as time expired. Wheeler earned the victory for the Raiders stopping 20 shots on goal, while Vineberg turned away 23 for the Big Red.

Colgate will travel to Quinnipiac and Princeton on Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3 in its first ECACHL road series of the season. The two games will mark the conclusion of the 2005 season for the Raiders, as Colgate takes a month-long break and will return to action on January 4.
