Boxscore

HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/26/05) - Head Coach Scott Wiley of the Colgate women’s ice hockey team earned his 50th career win and 50th at the helm of the Raiders' bench as Colgate defeated Cornell 3-1 on November 26 at Starr Rink.

The Raiders improve their record to 6-4-2 overall and remain perfect in the ECAC Hockey League with a 3-0-0 mark. The Big Red falls to 2-5-0 and 0-3-0 in the conference. Colgate improves its unbeaten streak against Cornell to seven games.

Sophomore center Cassie Reid (Chilliwack, B.C.), with help from freshman Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.), opened the scoring for the Raiders with a power-play tally. Reid poked the puck past Cornell netminder Beth Baronick at the eight-minute mark after a barrage of shots in front of the Big Red net. Reid found herself to the right of the net and was being heavily guarded by the Big Red defense but managed to poke the puck over the goal line.

Freshman Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) increased the lead for the Raiders at 6:29 of the second period. Senior Becky Irvine (Lakeview, N.S.) picked up a Tara French (Truro, N.S.) pass and sent a shot towards the net form the right face-off circle. Amidst a flurry of sticks and skates in front of Baronick, Brown tipped in Irvine’s shot finding room stick side.

Freshman Ruth Fish (Dewitt, N.Y.) padded the score, 3-0, with the Raiders’ second power-play goal, when she picked up a deflection and shot it home. Irvine wristed a shot from the left face-off circle which hit Baronick’s pads and glided back out into open ice. Fish found the loose puck and sent it flying to light the lamp again for the Raiders at 5:25 of the third.

Cornell was able to brighten its lights on the scoreboard at 8:00 in the third, when Emma Chipman recorded her first goal of the season. Halina Kristalyn took a shot from the left face-off circle that Colgate’s Brook Wheeler stopped. Wheeler believed the puck was under her glove but it had been dislodged and Emma Chipman took advantage as she was waiting on the doorstep.

Wheeler was impressive in net, stopping some stunners, turning away 17 total. Baronick made 27 saves for the Big Red.

The two teams will battle it out again tomorrow in the second contest of the home-and-home series, this time on Big Red territory. The puck drops at 2 p.m., at Lynah Rink in Ithaca.
