No. 17 Raiders Skate to 1-1 Tie With Rensselaer

HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/18/05) - The No. 17 Colgate hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie with visiting Rensselaer on Friday, Nov. 18, in front of 1,827 fans at Starr Rink. The Raiders are now 6-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the ECACHL, while the Engineers stand at 6-4-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the league.

Much of the game proved to be a battle of the goaltenders. Colgate sophomore Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) made 30 saves, including 16 in the second period. Rensselaer freshman Mathias Lange finished with 27 stops, including four in the overtime session.

Colgate struck first, 8:01 into the first period on the power play. Sophomore Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) won the faceoff in the offensive zone, and the puck came back to freshman Nick St. Pierre (St. Etienne, Que.) at the point. St. Pierre cycled the puck to senior captain Jon Smyth (Markham, Ont.), who gave it back to Burton in front of the net. Burton scored five-hole on Lange to extend his scoring streak to a career-high seven games. Colgate has netted at least one power-play goal in every game this season.

With just 35 seconds left in the second period, Rensselaer tied the score. Senior Scott Romfo shot from the right side, and the rebound came to junior Oren Eizenman, who put the puck over Dekanich’s blocker.

Colgate finished the game 1-for-7 on the power play, and killed off all seven Rensselaer extra-man opportunities. The Engineers outshot the Raiders, 31-28, but Colgate dominated on faceoffs, 49-29.

The Raiders host Union in their only home matinee of the season tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. Tonight, the Dutchmen defeated Cornell at Lynah Rink, 2-1.
