Boxscore

TROY, N.Y (10/15/05) - Colgate and Rensselaer battled to a 1-1 overtime tie in game two of the two-game home-and-home series. Colgate is now 0-1-1 on the season, while Rensselaer earned its first record blemish, 3-0-1.

In similar fashion to last night’s game at Starr Rink the first period was scoreless, with the Raiders peppering the net with 14 shots to the Engineers four.

The Raiders gained the lead at 3:40 of the second period when Allison Paiano (Orleans, Ont./Ottawa Raiders) tallied a power-play goal.  The senior left wing, scored from the slot when her shot hit the post, came back to bounce off Rosina Schiff in net and then crossed the goal line. Senior Becky Irvine (Lakeview, N.S./Berkshire School) and junior Tara French (Truro, NS/Deerfield Academy) earned the assists on the play.

With the seconds ticking off of the clock, Rensselaer pulled goaltender Schiff to add the extra attacker and their ploy worked out as leading scorer Sarah Daniel was able to score an unassisted marker with just four seconds remaining on the clock. Daniel picked up a loose puck in the slot and sent a shot wide to the left of the net. She gathered the rebound behind the net and wrapped the puck around, sending a backhanded shot just under the crossbar at 19:54.

Colgate, looking to pick up its first win of the season, sent six shots on Schiff in overtime put she was able to shut down the Raiders offense. The Engineers did not muster a single shot on net in the extra session.

Colgate finished with 36 shots on net, with 14 in the first period, ten in the second and six in both the third and overtime periods. The Raiders were also perfect on the penalty kill, holding Rensselaer to an 0-for-7 with the advantage. The Engineers, had four shots in the first, five in the second and six in the third. They were 3-for-4 when shorthanded.

Raider goaltender Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont./Canterbury Saints) turned away 14 shots in the game, while Rensselaer’s Rosina Schiff made 34 saves.

The Raiders will play in a two-game set against Providence at the Schneider Arena in Providence on October 22-23. Both games begin at 2 p.m.
