Colgate Football Wins Its Third Straight Game With A 23-0 Decision Over Fordham

HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/15/05) – Colgate quarterback Mike Saraceno (Sunrise, FL) rushed for a career-high 92 yards and one touchdown, and passed for 164 yards to lead the Raiders to a 23-0 Patriot League win over Fordham Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium.
 
Colgate (4-2 overall, 1-0 Patriot League) wins its third straight game, while Fordham (0-6, 0-2 PL) drops its ninth straight contest.
 
The Colgate defense also came up big with its first shutout of the season, and first since a 33-0 win over Georgetown last season. The Raiders held Fordham to 111 yards of total offense – 57 rushing and 54 passing. The Rams didn’t complete a pass play until 10:03 was left in the third quarter.
 
Saraceno completed 13-of-25 passes for 164 yards, while freshman running back Jordan Scott (Hyattsville, MD) carried 27 times for 58 yards and one touchdown. Colgate wide receiver DeWayne Long (West Des Moines, IA) caught seven passes for 81 yards, and moved into 10th place on the school’s all-time reception chart with 99 catches.
 
After a scoreless first quarter, the Raiders finally got on the scoreboard with 7:28 remaining in the first half. Scott capped a 70-yard drive with a one-yard run off tackle for the touchdown. Mike Rava (Moscow, PA) added the extra point.
 
Later in the second quarter, the Raiders took over on their own 42-yard line following a Fordham punt. On third-and-three at the Fordham 30, Saraceno scrambled 22 yards to the eight-yard line, but the Fordham defense forced the Raiders to settle for a 22-yard field goal by Rava with 1:10 remaining and a 10-0 halftime lead.
 
Sophomore cornerback Cody Williams (Blasdell, NY) gave Colgate a 16-0 lead in the third quarter, when he intercepted Fordham quarterback Matthew Fullam on the visitors’ 24-yard line, and raced across the field for the TD. The Raiders missed the extra point.
 
The final Colgate touchdown was scored with 2:14 remaining in the contest when Saraceno raced four yards for a TD to cap a 46-yard drive. Freshman placekicker Jacob Stein (St. Petersburg, FL) added the final point.
 
GAME NOTES – The Colgate defense has held the opposition to under 100 yards rushing in four of the six games this season … senior linebacker Jared Nepa (Carbondale, PA) and senior defense tackle Jeff Galletly (Franklin Lakes, NJ) had seven tackles apiece to lead the Raiders’ defensive effort … Galletly had a pair of sacks, while Nepa had one … senior defensive tackle Josh Wurst (Milford, NJ) had five tackles and two QB sacks … freshman defensive back Sam Breslin (Wayland, MA) stopped Fordham’s last drive of the contest with his first collegiate interception in the end zone … Cody Williams’ interception was his third of the season … the victory was coach Dick Biddle’s 80th, and he is 47-10 against Patriot League opponents.
