William A. Reid Athletic Center

Instantly recognizable as an architectural expression of the period, the William A. Reid Athletic Center was built in 1959. It was put immediately to use in support of several sports, in particular ice hockey when Colgate dedicated its new J. Howard Starr Rink on December 10, 1959.

Reid Athletic Center is named for William A. Reid '18, a member of the basketball and baseball teams, later coach of both teams, and Director of Athletics, a post he assumed in 1935 after the retirement of Dr. Ellery Channing Huntington.

The Reid Athletic Center was completed in 1966 with the dedication of the basketball court in the memory of Wesley M. Cotterell  ’19, Trustee. During this period, the Colgate student body numbered fewer than 1,500 men.

Today, and with a coeducational student body of more than 3,200 students, Reid accommodates the following:

  • The Victoria M. Chun '91, MA'94 and Susan Chun Academic Services Center, dedicated in the fall of 2017. Housed at the former location of the bowling alley, the new academic center is three times larger than the old academic center and provides Colgate's student-athletes with a state-of-the-art study space. Images and artifacts from each of Colgate's 25 sports are incorporated into the design of this new space.

  • Fred's Place, the Colgate Football Locker Room and the RCA Meeting Room, both renovated and dedicated in the fall of 2017. The locker room is completely custom with 91 state-of-the-art lockers, a new audio/visual system, and new carpeting and branding. Adjacent to the locker room is The RCA Meeting Room, named for Ruth Cline Applegate and all Colgate football moms. This new space provides flexibility to meet as a full team and also divide into four smaller rooms for position meetings. Each room is equipped with audio and video equipment with custom branding throughout.

  • Locker rooms and coaches offices for men's and women's basketball, field hockey, volleyball, softball, golf, and men's and women's tennis.

  • The Geyer-Campbell Sports Medicine Center

  • Starr Rink, the former home of men's and women's hockey. The facility accommodated 2,000 spectators, with chair-back seating on the north side of the rink and bleacher seating on the south side. The building now serves as a basketball practice facility.

  • Laundry room facilities
