Sanford Field House
The Charles H. Sanford Field House is used by numerous Colgate teams and the general public throughout the year. It has an AstroTurf playing surface comprising four tennis courts, softball batting cages and a large center divider which allows simultaneous practices, bordered by a six lane, 200 meter Plexitrac track and various areas for jumping and pole vault activities.
Sanford is home to the annual Class of ’32 Track Meet and indoor non-league tennis matches when weather does not permit play on the Joseph W. Abrahamson courts. It also contains the Maroon Council lounge and the offices of the track and cross country, softball, golf and tennis coaches.
The field house was dedicated on November 11, 1987 and stands in testimony to the leadership and generosity of Trustee Charles H. Sanford, Class of 1958. The Class of ’32 track was dedicated on June 4, 1988 in memory of Jack Rourke, track coach and trainer.
The first men’s track meet was held on February 19, 1988 with a final score University of Rochester 83, Colgate 59 and Hamilton College 37. The first varsity women’s team meet was also the team’s first sweep- by 40 points over Hamilton and Roberts Wesleyan College on February 16, 1991.
